About PNEUMOVAX®23 (Pneumococcal Vaccine Polyvalent)

About PNEUMOVAX 23

PNEUMOVAX 23 can help protect against infection by 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. These 23 types include those that are most common and most often cause serious disease in the United States.

PNEUMOVAX 23 is a vaccine that helps prevent
pneumococcal disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends PNEUMOVAX 23:

  • For people who have certain chronic conditions—like diabetes, heart disease, or COPD—who are 19 to 64 years old
  • One time, for people who are 65 years or older, even if they may have received a dose of another vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia

PNEUMOVAX 23 may not protect everyone who gets it. It will not protect against diseases that are caused by bacteria types that are not in the vaccine.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if PNEUMOVAX 23 is right for you.

What you should know if you’re 65 years or older.

Even if you already had a dose of another pneumococcal vaccine, the CDC recommends you get 1 dose of PNEUMOVAX 23 if you’re 65 years or older.

Adding PNEUMOVAX 23 helps protect you from 23 of the most common strains of bacteria that cause pneumococcal disease, which includes pneumococcal infections of the lung, blood, and coverings of the brain and spinal cord.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your vaccination history and find out if PNEUMOVAX 23 is right for you.
